FROM POPPY APPEAL
|
The Spice Girls have
launched the annual poppy appeal as the
Royal British Legion tried to update its
image and beat the £16m it raised last
year.
Sharing a podium with Forces' Sweetheart
Dame Vera Lynn, the five pop stars read a
joint appeal to remember those who died
at war.
Geri: "War affects everyone
especially the young like in the
Falklands and Bosnia today so as the next
generation this is our future so it's our
responsibility to get involved."
Mel C: "Millions of people died so
that we could be free."
Mel B: "And it's time to remember
and say thanks because many people paid a
very high price for freedom and we must
never forget them."
Victoria: "So please remember to buy
your poppies."
Emma : "And we need you all to
participate in the two-minute silence on
the 11th hour of the 11th of November,
please remember and say thank you."
They then joined together and read the
poem "The Fallen" by Lawrence
Binyan.
Photographers stopped taking pictures as
they read: "They shall not grow old
as we that are left grow old. Age shall
not weary them nor the years condemn.

GIRLS HELP LAUNCH POPPY APPEAL
|
| Forces' Sweetheart
Vera Lynn became an honorary
Spice Girl today as she joined
the feisty five to launch this
year's Poppy Appeal. |
|
In a
symbolic bringing-together of the
generations, "Super
Spice" joined Geri, Mel B,
Mel C, Victoria and Emma to urge
youngsters to honour Britain's
war dead.
The Fab Five, all dressed in
black and sporting large red
poppies, stepped forward to
remind everyone of the price of
freedom. Geri Halliwell, 24,
said: "War affects everyone
especially the young. As the next
generation it is our future and
our responsibility to get
involved." Mel Brown, 21,
added: "It is time to
remember and say thanks because
many people paid a very high
price." And they all urged
Britain's young people to go out
and buy a red poppy to help raise
urgently needed funds for the
Royal British Legion. Then, at a
specially arranged launch on the
steps at the rear of London's
Albert Hall, they each read a
line from Laurence Binyon's
emotive poem - The Fallen.
Photographers
observed their request to stop
taking pictures as they read out:
"They shall not grow old as
we that are left grow old. Age
shall not weary them nor the
years condemn. At the going down
of the sun and in the morning we
will remember them."
And, in unison, they said with
feeling: "We will remember
them."

GIRLS CANCEL PRESS CONFERENCE
|
The Spice Girls have
conveniently sidestepped an impending
showdown with the Swedish media by
canceling their planned trip to Sweden
due to illness.The Swedish newspaper
Aftonbladet reports that Geri Halliwell
is bed-ridden in Japan with a bad cold.
In what could be a prelude of things to
come in Canada, Swedish journalists were
threatening to boycott a news conference
that the British pop group planned to
hold Friday because of a demand that
photographers sign an agreement not to
use pictures of the appearance without
the singers' permission.
The Spice Girls even demanded that
photographers hand over their negatives.
Even before the group cancelled,
promoters were already rethinking the
whole affair. "We think it may be
best not to hold a news conference if
people are in a bad humor," said Eva
Haellefors, Swedish promotions chief for
the group's record label Virgin.
In Canada, the situation will likely be
similar. "What Canadian journalists
and photographers will be asked to sign
is a release form that prevents them from
selling their story or photos to another
publication without the Spice
Girls/record company's permission,"
says Nancy Yu, national artist and media
relations manager for Virgin Music
Canada.
The Spice Girls will be doing press in
several countries this fall,
possibly including Canada, says Yu. |

keyboardists, 1 drummer and one
percussionist. During the show,
the only thing that didn't go as
planned, was the Mini on a
rollercoaster which didn't want
to move.
They came onto the stage with a
burst of smoke, and their catchy
outfits changed several times.
The stage consisted of a
fairground design with a central
arch made to look like a
rollercoaster ride with a huge
video screen playing video clips
as a backdrop.The Spice Girls
have been practicing for over a
month, and Pepsi has reportedly
spent over £1,5 million on the
concert.
David Beckham was of course part
of the crowd. |
